Cindy has learned strawbale building & plasters with many expert builders including Bill & Athena Steen & specializes in plastering on a professional level.  Emphasis will be on detailing each step to make the whole process easier and more efficient.  Review how to build strawbale walls with clay plaster in mind.  Learn how to identify clay, process ingredients, apply clay slip & mix plaster by hand or with various machines.  Learn how important the wall preparation is & how you can do one ultra strong base coat of earthen plaster (rather than  multiple coats).  Labor saving method of application with simple tools will give you an even base, which is ideal  for a quick finish plaster application.

 June 5th-6th:  Intro woodchip clay workshop:  Near Victoria, BC        |         Instructor:  Cindy Walker
 
 Lightclay (woodchip & strawclay) is gaining popularity as an insulated wall system.  Using local woodchip waste and clay is a very low impact & breathable wall system.   It can be used as infill walls in post and beam or stickframe structures.   Walls can be built as thin as 6" which is great for outbuildings.  In this workshop learn how to identify and process clay.  Discuss various methods for framing infill wall structure.  Mix woodchip clay & strawclay with various mixers and build walls.  .          $150/2 days
June 12th-13th:  Earthen Floor Workshop:  Near Victoria, BC        |         Instructor:  Cindy Walker
Earthen floors are traditional adobe style... made with clay, sand and fibre.  They are oiled and burnished to a durable, water resistant (moppable) surface.  They can be installed over grade or existing cement and have radiant heating.  In this workshop learn how to... identify clay and process ingredients for both floor layers.  Learn important steps for preparing the surface underneath  the floor.  Mix and  apply the base layer.   Make color samples for decorative finish layer with colored clays, pigments & straw.   $120/1.5 days

Earth plasters have all  natural ingredients such as clay, sand and fibre.  In this workshop learn how to identify clay & figure out earth plaster recipes on your own.   Cindy specializes in earthen plasters & has trained many homeowners & crews throughout the years,  Emphasis will be on how to process ingredients, mix & apply earthen plaster on a professional level with attention to details, you can save alot of time plastering your project.  We will have the opportunity to compare mixtures & methods for plastering cob, lightclay & strawbale walls.  Discussion topics will include how to prepare walls, and when to do 1 or 2 layers.  Optional subject will be how to sculpt designs onto walls with cob & earth plasters.

Earthen ovens are an easy and creative project.  Learn the basics of how to build a stone foundation for an oven.  Lay out fire bricks, identify clay & learn how to mix up materials for the various earthen layers of the oven.  Mix cob & learn how to sculpt your oven into any shape or sculpt designs on it.  Discuss how to fire your oven...it really works...once you fire it up, you can bake for hours, even in the wintertime.  Imagine wood-fired pizza, bread, roasted salmon with veggies, muffins & apples crisp...                        1 Day/$80

Intro to clay finish plasters...find out where to buy materials such as powdered clays & pigments.   Learn how to mix clay finish plaster & apply over an earthen base coat.  The same plaster can also be applied over various surfaces including drywall, painted walls & stucco.  Make color samples & try out different techniques on sample boards...add chopped straw & mica or learn how to texture with a trowel for a feature wall.   Evening Natural Plaster powerpoint presentation.           Click here for photos     $175/2 Days
