Natural
walls & Natural Plasters:
In Canada strawbale, cob and
lightclay are common natural building methods that are very compatible
with natural plasters. A common mistake is using any type of wire or
plastic mesh on strawbale walls with natural plasters. Stucco wire
works great with cement stucco, but most natural builders/plasterers I`ve met advocate not using stucco wire with clay plaster. All of the
failing clay
plasters I`ve seen have stucco wire underneath. (A final
coat of interior clay plaster can be applied to an existing layer of
stucco without problems.)

your walls without stucco wire.

What is Earthen (Clay) Plaster?
Earthen plasters are used as base coats to fill in the surface of strawbale, cob, lightclay
& adobe walls. Clay (from the local ground), sand and chopped
straw are used. Natural plasters are more breathable than cement stucco and have
a lower environmental impact, as well as being made with non-toxic
materials.
Guidance is recommended to figure out the recipe and how to process/mix
ingredients. It pays to do a good
quality base coat because the final coat will be much easier.
Clay Finish Plasters and
Paints:
Clay finish plasters are durable finish that
are easy to repair & they naturally repel dust. They can easily be clay
painted in the future if you decide to change the color. Powdered clay and
fine sands are often used in final coats to get a consistent
finish. Other additives such as fine fiber, flour paste and
pigments are also added. Almost any color can be created by combining
non-toxic pigments and clays. The finished surface can range
between ultra smooth and highly textured. Mica & chopped straw can be
added for added for feature
walls.
